As far as sockets go, I would be happy to offer the material from my netowrk programming tutorial as a basis for further development. See http://www.holdenweb.com/linuxworld/. There's also some material in the Sockets HowTo at http://www.amk.ca/python/howto/sockets/ that could be pressed into service.
